Go to school, get good grades, get a good job…. live happily ever after, right? Like many people, we spent the first 20 – 30 years of our life following the standard plan of school, good grades, uni, good job. After a while we thought, is this as good as it gets? Working for other people, dealing with office politics, long hours, all for a limited salary?
We started to explore options
We learnt that as we were working for money, we were on the ‘wrong’ (left) side of the cash flow quadrant* (Robert Kiyosaki). On the ‘other side’ (right), you have leverage – passive income, freedom, flexibility – more time! So how do we get on the right side?
Solution? We had an entrepreneurial fit
We started our own business – working from home – something Michael Gerber (E-Myth Revisited) calls an entrepreneurial fit.
We went down the conventional business path seeking the benefits of the left hand side of the cash flow quadrant – hiring staff and selling mainstream products for leverage.
So we had our own home based business, but we’re not quite there yet…
We found that we were ultimately working so we could pay the salaries of our employees! (If you’ve been there, you know what we are talking about!) We realized this wasn’t our kind of success either.
Our dream? Work when we wanted, and with like minded, inspiring people
We had a great work ethic, we are fiercely determined, but we wanted to work on our terms. We were committed to creating a lifestyle – for us that meant a family centered lifestyle, where quantity of time with our kids. We didn’t want to spend the majority of our lives with strangers, which is what happens with ‘normal jobs’.
So how do we achieve our dream?
We finally cracked the code!
We sought out better business models.
When did we know we had succeeded? When our young children would comment that they were the only kids in their class where both parents were available to get involved in school activities at any time or day of the week!
